This winter has been daunting; with frigid temperatures and icy conditions for much of the nation. It is no wonder we are spending more time in our houses. As a result, we are looking at the same walls day in and day out. But when is the last time that you really looked at the inside of your house? We go to the kitchen cabinet for a cup of tea, head to the powder bath to blow our nose, or sit on the sofa in the family room watching television… but are we really seeing the inside of our homes?
Instead of looking at the same old house, the same old way, make the New Year the time to look at your house differently. Spend these cold weeks making a list of what could be changed right now and what could be this year’s project.
Powder bath – The paint color trends for 2014 are blue hues. Consider a new paint color like Benjamin Moore’s van deusen blue, part of their Historic Color collection. Take out the old sink and put in a new vanity with new lighting, hardware and an updated faucet. An even quicker fix would be to buy new towels, rugs, and a soap dish for this room.
Kitchen – Look at the flow of your kitchen. Is it working for you? Or is it time to look at resurfacing or replacing your cabinets? Adding an island can give you more storage, counter space and color. Knocking out a wall will open up your floor plan. However, maybe changing out the cabinet hardware is enough of a change this year, along with sprucing up the accessories on your counters or switching out the cushions on your chairs and stools.
Fireplace – What is surrounding your fireplace? You can make big improvements with little work by changing out the display on your mantel. Move some art around, or change the candlesticks to mercury glass vases. Better yet, replace the entire mantel with a different wood, stain or paint color. If your fireplace has a tile floor or is surrounded by tile, switching out the tiles to a more current look or even a vintage look can change the entire feel of the room.
